- Reading of a Proclamation for the "Esteemed Veteran of Roswell" Award to United States Marine Corps Sergeant Van P. Cunningham.
Van P. Cunningham was born on Nov. 10, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia, and demonstrated unwavering patriotism and dedication to service from an early age.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 19 and began active duty on Jan. 8, 1967, when he embarked on Basic Training as a Marine Rifleman at Parris Island, South Carolina.
Cunningham served with distinction at Marine Barracks, 8th & I in Washington, D.C., where he performed Ceremonial Guard Duty and participated in numerous solemn and prestigious events.
He provided security at the Presidential Retreat at Camp David, Maryland, demonstrating exceptional trustworthiness and earning a Top-Secret Security Clearance.
In late winter of 1969, Cunningham received orders for deployment to South Vietnam, where he was assigned to Marine Infantry Rifle Company "Charlie," 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, operating in the "Dodge City" area south of Da Nang.
Having earned the rank of Meritorious Corporal during his time in Washington, D.C., he was appointed squad leader upon arrival in Vietnam and soon promoted to sergeant, showcasing his leadership and valor under challenging combat conditions.
Despite contracting malaria, Sergeant Cunningham returned to his unit and continued to fulfill his duties with unwavering determination until completing his combat tour in March 1970.
Upon honorable discharge from active duty, Sergeant Cunningham returned to Georgia, utilized the G.I. Bill to further his education at Georgia Southern College, and developed a passion for woodworking.
He built a fulfilling personal life, marrying in 1971, raising two children, Katrina and Patrick, and nurturing a family environment grounded in faith and love.
Sergeant Cunningham began a distinguished 28-year career with the Cobb County Fire Department on Jan. 16, 1975, serving as a First Responder and EMT, responding to approximately 4,000 emergency calls, and achieving the rank of lieutenant in January 1986.
Following his retirement on Jan. 1, 2003, Sergeant Van P. Cunningham continued his dedication to public service through 20 years of part-time work with Cobb Elections, and has since enjoyed life with a growing family, including four grandchildren, and new experiences with his beloved wife and step-daughter.

- Approval of a change order to CMAR for Historic Parks Comprehensive Plan and approval of Budget Amendment 22662000-11-12-24 in the amount of $2,131,606.80.
Action: Approved unanimously
- Approval to Award a Contract from the Mayor and Council to start and complete renovations within East Roswell Park and East Roswell Dog Park and Budget Amendment BA31462000-11-12-24.
Action: Approved unanimously
- Approval of a Resolution Instituting a Temporary Moratorium on Murals in the City of Roswell.
Action: Deferred unanimously to the Nov. 18 committee meeting.
