Basic Patrol Rifle
August 9-11, 2023 (24 hours)

This course is designed for patrol and other law enforcement personnel who have access to a rifle while on duty. The course focuses on marksmanship skills and fundamentals with a patrol rifle equipped with or without optics. Although the basics will be taught it is encouraged for officers to have some working knowledge of the weapon system. Officers should have an agency issued or approved rifle they carry on duty and sights should be zeroed at a minimum of 50 yards before arriving for the class. Zeroes will be checked and adjusted the first day of class however, that time is limited to allow for more time to focus on the fundamentals of shooting the rifle. Officers in this course will be shooting a rifle from various positions and at varying distances for situations which they may be confronted with while on duty. Officers will participate in single and multiple target engagement, moving target engagement, decision reaction problems, and handgun transition. The course topics include fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, sighting systems, moving target engagement, rifle safety, nomenclature and maintenance.

Student Equipment:
  • Department issued or approved Rifle with a sling and minimum of 3 magazines
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Plate carrier or soft body armor
  • Department issued pistol
  • 700 round of rifle ammunition
  • 200 rounds of pistol ammunition
  • Ear and eye protection and a hat
Day 1 will be classroom instruction at RAPSTC consisting of nomenclature, basic shooting positions, grip, stance, zero and basic weapons manipulation (loading/unloading/failure to fire) and function drills. Days 2 and 3 will be conducted at the Pickens County Sheriff's Office Firing Range.
